Program

This school comprises three lecture courses (in English) aimed at 1st- or 2nd-year undergraduate students of mathematics, complemented by problem sessions.

Courses

Basic ergodic theory

by Omri Sarig (Weizmann Institute of Science)

Abstract: I will give an overview of the basics of ergodic theory. Topics will include: Preliminaries on measure theory, examples of measure preserving systems, ergodicity, mixing, and (time permitting) entropy.

An introduction to small divisor problems

by Stefano Marmi (SNS, Pisa)

Abstract: The problem of stability of quasiperiodic orbits is one of the oldest in the theory of dynamical systems, with its roots in celestial mechanics. I will try to illustrate the fascinating interplay of analysis, number theory, topology and dynamics which makes this part of the theory of dynamical systems both beautiful and difficult.

Uniform distribution, dynamics, and Diophantine problems

by Vitaly Bergelson (Ohio State University)

Abstract: The goal of these lecture is to demonstrate the multifaceted and mutually perpetuating connections of the notion of uniform distribution of sequences with ergodic theory, topological dynamics, combinatorics, and Diophantine analysis.

Friday, July 10th at 17h30, after the problem session, there will be a meeting in Sala do Foyer do GA where the participants will be able to talk to the lecturers about academic life in a relaxed setting.

Afterwards, there will be a dinner at 8pm at Restaurante d'Bacalhau at Parque das Nações. Here are instructions on how to get to the restaurant from the school venue.

Mini-conference

On Saturday, July 11th, there will be a student mini-conference at the Gulbenkian Foundation.
All school participants are invited to attend this mini-conference. Here is the schedule of the mini-conference.
