Geometry Summer School

Lisbon, July 13-17, 2009

Local Information

The school will take place at the main (i.e. Alameda) campus of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), located roughly at the center of the google map below and at only about 3 Km from the Lisbon airport.

The surroundings are quite urban, with many hotels, restaurants, transportation options and cultural sites around. Information on some convenient hotels is listed under accomodation.

From the airport, the most convenient is probably to take a cab. Alternatively, you may look up Lisbon's bus system Carris and subway system Metro. Note that there is still no subway station at the airport, one must first take a bus in order to connect to the subway.

If you take a ride to the hotel, make sure you specify the name or address carefully. For instance, say Hotel A.S. Lisboa (without the A.S. would be ambiguous) or Hotel Metrópole at Rossio (to avoid the common confusion with Hotel Metropolitan).

The subway stations closest to the school are Alameda (green and red lines) and Saldanha (yellow line). Prepaid tickets are available from automated machines in every station. From the station Alameda to the math department, you have to climb up the boulevard westward, cross the street and climb the stairs to enter campus through its main gate. Walk straight to the main building at the top (that says Instituto Superior Técnico on it). Walk around that building to the left. When you reach the back corner, turn left to go downhill towards Pavilhão de Matemática.

Arriving by train, the most convenient is to get off at Gare do Oriente (instead of Santa Apolónia) and take the subway to Alameda. Information on trains may be found from the national network CP.

Visas are not required for European Union or USA citizens. If you need help getting a visa to attend the school, please contact us as soon as possible. A list of portuguese embassies may be found here.

The local currency is the Euro. Up-to-date conversion may be obtained at a currency converter.

There's no universal rule for tipping. We suggest about 5% to 10% in restaurants or cafés with waiters, with 10% for small bills. In cabs 5% should be enough, though drivers might expect more from generous tourists.

In July the Lisbon weather is usually hot and sunny (dry), with average low temperature 17°C and high temperature 27°C.
