The Holographic Principle, M-Theory and Cosmology

Tom Banks

Abstract :
I will discuss the origin of the Holographic Principle and the Principle of Black Hole Complementarity in the proposed resolution of the Black Hole Information Paradox. I will then briefly describe the manifestations of the holographic principle in perturbative string theory, Matrix Theory, and the AdS/CFT correspondence. The main subject of my lectures is the use of the holographic principle in cosmology. I will review the work of Fischler, Susskind and Bousso on the cosmological holographic principle, and then discuss the application to Big Bang Universes, and conjectures about the relation between supersymmetry and cosmology, as well as the conceptual problems arising from the existence of a cosmological horizon.
