XIIIth OPORTO MEETING
on

GEOMETRY, TOPOLOGY AND PHYSICS

16-19 July
2004

INTRODUCTION

The XIIIth Oporto Meeting on Geometry, Topology and Physics will take place in Oporto, Portugal, from July 16th to 19th, 2004 (Friday to Monday). The aim of the Oporto meetings is to bring together mathematicians and physicists interested in the inter-relation between geometry, topology and physics and to provide them with a pleasant and informal environment for scientific interchange. The web pages of previous meetings can be found at: OM.

As in previous years, the meeting is focussed on the short courses given by the main speakers (see below for details), which are supplemented by seminars by other participants. The talks are at the advanced graduate or postdoctoral level, and should be of interest to all researchers wishing to learn about recent developments in the overlap between geometry, topology and physics.

The main topic of our XIIIth edition will be

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN CHERN-SIMONS THEORY

MAIN SPEAKERS

The main speakers will each give a minicourse of three one-hour lectures.

Dror BAR-NATAN (University of Toronto) New and Newer Knot Invariants
Sergei GUKOV (Harvard University) Quantum Geometry of Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds
Justin ROBERTS (University of California at San Diego) Derived categories and Rozansky-Witten invariants
Chris WOODWARD (Rutgers University) Geometry of moduli spaces of flat bundles, quantum 6j symbols, and asymptotics of the Turaev-Viro invariant

INFORMATION for PROSPECTIVE PARTICIPANTS

Those wishing to participate should fill in and return the registration form not later than April 30th, 2004. Due to limitations of numbers we may not be able to accept all registrations. Decisions about registrations, talks and requests for financial support will be made by May 15th.

Participants should aim to arrive by the 15th of July, since the meeting will start in the morning on the 16th. The meeting will continue until the middle or end of the afternoon of the 19th of July.

Participants arriving by air are advised to book well in advance, since Portugal is likely to attract more visitors this year, because of the Euro 2004 football championship, 12th June - 4th July. There are many international direct flights to Oporto International Airport. If no convenient flight to Oporto is available participants from abroad may fly to Lisbon and catch an internal connecting flight or take a train to Oporto. The train journey from Lisbon to Oporto lasts a minimum of 3 hours.

TRANSPORT FROM THE AIRPORT TO OPORTO:
There are good connections from the airport to Oporto.
By bus:
There exists a bus route, called AeroBus, providing a fast connection between the airport and the city's leading hotels and downtown Porto (tell the driver where you are going). The AeroBus leaves every 30m (from 7:00 to 19:00) and it costs 2,50 euros. For more information (timetables, etc) visit the AeroBus Web Site.
By taxi:
Price around 15 Euros. A small tip of around 5 percent is appreciated but not essential.

ARRIVING BY TRAIN:
See train schedules and prices on the web page of CP. The train stops at the Campanhã railway station.
From there you have local buses (the local company is called STCP) that pass near in the Hotel. You can catch the line 34 (see its route), and exit at the end of the line, or the line 35 (see its route) and exit at "Junta Massarelos". The price of the ticket is 0,55 euros if prepaid and 1,00 euro if bought on the bus. Another alternative is to use a taxi. From the train station to the hotel the price should be around 8 euros.

Due to the limitations of the budget it is unlikely that financial support will be available except for the main speakers and some Portuguese students.

The meeting is to be held in Oporto, Portugal's second-largest city, offering many attractive sightseeing possibilities.

Oporto's historical centre was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. Local food and wine is excellent, and in particular Oporto (Porto in Portuguese) is the home of Port wine.
