Reform of the IST Applied Mathematics Master Program adapting it to be the course component of the IST Doctor Degree in Mathematics
at a time of the first graduates of the IST undergraduate Mathematics degree

In 1990-93 was prepared and implemented a reform of this Program by Luis Magalhães, who was the Coordinator of the IST Applied Mathematics Master Program. This Program had been designed in 1981-82 having mainly in mind the qualification of Teaching Assistants, many of them holding Engineering or Physics undergraduate degrees, and admitted students only every other year. That was no longer the main concern and it was now necessary to admit students every year, at a time when the first graduates of the IST undergraduate Mathematics degree were finishing the Program. It was organized to ensure more advanced trainning of Mathematics graduates with courses for the IST Doctor Degree in Mathematics, but with flexible requirements that could accomodate the needs of both candidates just finishing undergraduate programs in Mathematics or in Engineering, Physics or other science degrees.

The Program was organized in the following areas:

• Algebra and Foundations,
• Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems,
• Partial Differential Equations and Calculus of Variations,
• Functional Analysis,
• Geometry and Topology,
• Numerical Analysis,
• Computing,
• Probability and Statistics,
• Aplications to Enguneering and Physics.

Besides a core set of courses, all areas had Special Topics courses allowing for different advanced topics to be lectured according to the faculty and students interests.
