Organize International Research Conferences

In 1986, Luis Magalhães and Carlos Rocha organized at the IST the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on Dynamics of Infinite Dimensional Systems, with 80 participants, remembered as an important international meeting and from which resulted the publication of the then important proceedings: Shui-Nee Chow, Jack K. Hale (editors), Dynamics of Infinite Dimensional Systems, Conference Proceedings, NATO ASI Subseries F, volume 37, Springer Verlag, 1987.

This conference put the IST Research Group on Differential Equations, Dynamical Systems, Geometry and Topolgy, and the IST Mathematics Department, on the international map of research in the area.

In 1995, Luis Magalhães (Chair) with José Basto Gonçalves (Faculty of Sciences of U. of Porto), Carlos Rocha, and Luís Sanchez (Faculty of Sciences of U. of Lisbon) organized the Equadiff95 – International Conference on Differential Equations in Lisbon, with Scientific Cimmittee composed by Franco Brezzi, Luis Caffarelli, Jack Carr, Björn Engquist, Klaus Kirchgässner, Pierre Louis Lions, John Mallet-Paret, Waldyr Oliva, Jacob Palis, Luc Tartar, John Toland, Hugo Beirão da Veiga. This conference had over 180 participants, with 30 prominent invited speakers, and reinforced the visibility of the IST and Portugal on the international map of the field. This meeting proceeedigs were published in Equadiff95 - International Conference on Differential Equations, eds. Magalhães, L., Rocha, C., Sanchez, L., World Scientific, Singapore, 1988.

Later on, other members of this Research Group organized regularly international conferences through the Center for mathematical Analysis, Geometry and Dynamical Systems (CAMGSD) that was later created. It is worth to mention the IST-IME Conferences organized jointly by the CAMGSD at IST and the IME - Institute of Mathematics and Statistics of the U. of São Paulo, of the initiative of Waldyr Oliva, Invited Full Professor at the IST Mathematics Department since 1993 and former Director of the IME and Rector of the U. of São Paulo.
