Initiate a regular Research Seminar
In 1985 Luis Magalhães initiated with Carlos Rocha and Manuel Ricou a regular Research Seminar,
initially called Seminar on Dynamical Systems and Mechanics of Continuous Media and with sessions every other week,
and later on called simply The Center Seminar, when the Research Group formed a Research Center in 1990,
initially called Center for Mathematical Analysis, Dynamical Systems and Applications to Engineering
and named Center for Mathematical Analysis, Geometry and Dynamical Systems (CAMGSD) in 1995.
In 1988 the seminar began having weekly sessions at IST, mostly with invited speakers from abroad
with the support
of two research projects funded by JNICT, one led by Luis Magalhães and the other by Carlos Rocha.
This was the first regular research seminar with foreign visitors held in any area at IST,
and was an example followed by others later on.
Other Research Seminars on specific areas were created by several Center members, in parallel with the Center Seminar.
For example, up to 2004 were created the following regular Research Seminars:
- Seminar of Mathematical Physics, by Rui Loja Fernandes and Esmeralda Sousa Dias (1995)
- Seminar of Geometry in Lisbon, by Rui Loja Fernandes and Miguel Abreu (1999)
- Seminar of Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems, by Luis Barreira (2002)
- Seminar of Partial Differential Equations, by João Palhoto Matos, Pedro Girão and Gabriel Pires (2003)
- Seminar of Mathematics, Systems and Robitics, joint iniciative of CAMGSD and ISR (2003).
