XIth OPORTO MEETING on GEOMETRY, TOPOLOGY and PHYSICS

The XIth Oporto Meeting on Geometry, Topology and Physics will take place
in Oporto, Portugal, from July 12th to 15th, 2002 (Friday to Monday). The
aim of the Oporto Meetings is to bring together mathematicians and physicists
interested in the inter-relation between geometry, topology and physics
and to provide them with a pleasant and informal environment for scientific
interchange. As in previous years, the meeting is focussed on the short
courses (3 lectures each) given by the main speakers (see below for details),
which are supplemented by seminars by other participants. The talks are
at the advanced graduate or postdoctoral level, and should be of interest
to all researchers wishing to learn about recent developments in the overlap
between geometry, topology and physics.

The main topic of the XIth OPORTO MEETING will be:

Information about access to computer facilities
during the Meeting and other tips see in

Time shift: please note that Portuguese time is one hour earlier than Spanish
or French time.

Those wishing to participate should fill in and return the
registration
form not later than April 30th, 2002.

Participants should aim to arrive by the 11th of July, since the
meeting will start in the morning on the 12th. The meeting will continue
until the middle or end of the afternoon of the 15th of July.

 The meeting will be held in the 
Department of Pure Mathematics of the Faculty of
Sciences of Oporto University.

There are many international direct flights to Oporto (Pedras Rubras)
airport. If no convenient flight to Oporto is available participants from
abroad may fly to Lisbon and catch an internal connecting flight or take
a train to Oporto. The train journey from Lisbon to Oporto lasts a minimum
of 3 hours.

 TRANSPORT FROM THE AIRPORT TO OPORTO:

There are good connections from the airport to Oporto.


By bus:


There exists a bus route, called AeroBus, providing a fast connection between the airport
and the city's leading hotels and downtown Porto (tell the driver where you are going).   The
   AeroBus leaves every 30m (from 7:45 to 19:15) and it costs 2,50 euros.

By taxi:

Price around 15 Euros. A small tip of around 5 percent is appreciated
but not essential.

ARRIVING BY TRAIN:

See train schedules and prices in the web page of CP.
The train stops at the Campanhã railway station. 


                       From there you have local buses (the local company is called STCP) that pass near in the Hotel. You can catch the line
                       34   (see its route), and exit at the end of the line, or the line 35 (see its route) and exit at "Junta".
                       The price of the ticket is 0,47 euros if prepaid and 0,95 euros if bought on the bus. 

                       Another alternative is to use a taxi. From the train station to the hotel the price should be around 8 euros. 



Due to the limitations of the budget it is unlikely that financial support
will be available except for the main speakers and some Portuguese students.

The meeting is to be held in Oporto, Portugal's
second-largest
city, offering many attractive sightseeing possibilities.



Recently Oporto's
historical centre was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. Local food
and wine is excellent, and in particular Oporto (Porto in Portuguese) is
the home of Port
wine.

There will be a fee of 100 Euros to be paid upon arrival
(which will also cover the lunches during the conference).
