IXth OPORTO MEETING on GEOMETRY, TOPOLOGY and PHYSICS

The IXth Oporto Meeting on Geometry, Topology and Physics (formerly known as the Oporto Meetings on Knot Theory and Physics) will take place in Oporto, Portugal, from September 29th to October 2nd, being Friday to Monday. The aim of the Oporto meetings is to bring together mathematicians and physicists interested in the inter-relation between geometry, topology and physics and to provide them with a pleasant and informal environment for scientific interchange.

As in previous years, we are aiming to focus to some extent on certain themes. The themes we would like to focus on this year are

  1. - Differential Geometry
  2. - Algebraic Geometry
The meeting will consist largely of short courses, of approximately three lectures each, given by the main speakers, supplemented by a limited number of seminars (more details later). The talks are at the advanced graduate or postdoctoral level, and should be of interest to all researchers wishing to learn about recent developments in the overlap between geometry, topology and physics.

MAIN SPEAKERS

Maks A. AKIVIS

Vladislav V. GOLDBERG
(Jerusalem College of Technology, Jerusalem, ISRAEL)
(New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ, USA)

INFORMATION for PROSPECTIVE PARTICIPANTS

Time shift: please note that Portuguese time is one hour earlier than Spanish or French time.

Those wishing to participate should fill in and return the registration form not later than July 30th, 2000.

Participants should aim to arrive by the 28th of September, since the meeting will start in the morning on the 29th. The meeting will continue until the middle or end of the afternoon of the 2nd of October.

The meeting will be held in the Faculty of Science building of the University of Oporto, in Oporto's historical centre. See more details above.

There are many international direct flights to Oporto (Pedras Rubras) airport. If no convenient flight to Oporto is available participants from abroad may fly to Lisbon and catch an internal connecting flight or take a train to Oporto. The train journey from Lisbon to Oporto lasts a minimum of 3 hours.

TRANSPORT FROM THE AIRPORT TO OPORTO CENTRE:
Due to the substantial number of participants arriving by plane we will not be able to meet most people at the airport, except for the main speakers. There are however good connections from the airport to the centre of Oporto.
By bus:
The quickest option is the "AeroBus" (500 PTE, the ticket is valid for the rest of the day on all local buses). This leaves the airport every half hour from 07.45 to 19.15. Please inform the driver about your destination: for the Faculty of Sciences and Hotel Inca, get off at "Cordoaria" (right behind the Faculty of Sciences);
Number 56 : every 15 to 30 minutes; journey lasts approximately 45 minutes. Price of ticket: 180 escudos.
By taxi:
Price around 3000 escudos. A small tip of around 5 percent is appreciated but not essential.

ARRIVING BY TRAIN:
See train schedules and prices in the web page of CP. The train stops at the Campanhã railway station. Then you can:

  1. Take a taxi.
  2. Take bus number 35. Get off at "Praça Gomes Teixeira" for the Faculty of Sciences and Hotel Inca.
  3. Take another train to São Bento railway station (your ticket Lisbon-Oporto should be valid). This is not far from the Faculty and Hotel Inca.

Due to the limitations of the budget it is unlikely that financial support will be available except for the main speakers and some Portuguese students.

The meeting is to be held in Oporto (see also) , Portugal's second-largest city, offering many attractive sightseeing possibilities.

Recently Oporto's historical centre was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. Local food and wine is excellent, and in particular Oporto (Porto in Portuguese) is the home of Port wine.

MEETING FEES

There will be a fee of 10 000 $00 (50 Euros) to be paid upon arrival.
