The School on "SINGULARITIES IN ALGEBRAIC GEOMETRY & STRING THEORY" is an activity of the International Center of Mathematics , and will be held in Complexo Interdisciplinar of Universidade de Lisboa, Av. Prof. Gama Pinto, 2, P-1699 Lisboa Codex, Portugal.
This will be a 10 days long school on the fascinating interface between singularity theory (in complex algebraic geometry) and superstring theory. We will have 6 courses by leading experts on both mathematical and physical aspects of singularity theory (see courses below).

Those wishing to participate should fill in and return the registration form not later than April 30th, 1999.
Participants should aim to arrive by the 7th of July, since the meeting will start in the morning on the 8th. The meeting will continue until the 17th of July.
There will be a fee of 15000 PTE (75 Euros) to be payed upon arrival.
See page for touristic information about Lisbon.
The School will be held at Complexo Interdisciplinar of Universidade de Lisboa, Av. Prof. Gama Pinto, 2, P-1699 Lisboa Codex, Portugal, which is located close to underground station "Cidade Universitária" (yellow line) (see also main page of the Lisbon underground). About five minutes walk coming from the right of the map below along Av. Prof. Gama Pinto:

The organization has made a block reservation in (see also Residence below):
Hotel AS Lisboa
Avenida Almirante Reis, 188
1000 Lisboa
(near underground station "Alameda" - the last of the red line)
Phone: +351-1-8473025
Fax: +351-1-8473034
From the Hotel the School Site can be reached by taking the underground to station "Cidade Universitária" - yellow line (see local map ).
Please make your reservation by filling in the relevant part in the registration form.
The special prices for School participants are: 8500 Escudos/single (42.5 Euros) and 10500 Escudos/double and shared double (52.5 Euros).
Students Residence:
About 20 participants will be accomodated in the new
students residence of Lisbon Instituto Superior
Técnico near (about 10 minutes walk) the site where EXPO 98 took
place (also near underground and railways station Oriente - the underground station Oriente
is the first of the red line). From the Airport a taxi
should not take longer than 5-10 minutes (if there is no traffic).
Address:
Residência de Estudantes do Instituto Superior
Técnico
Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco
Avenida Dom João II
(near (="perto da" in portuguese) EXPO 98)
1800 Lisboa
The problem here is that the residence is located in a new avenue
which is
rather long but with few buildings and no (yet) street numbers.
It is located near EXPO 98 (5-10 minutes by foot -- see next point) and next to the
building of Instituto Português da Juventude.
There is a reception which is open 24 hours.
The receptionists may not speak english but they will
have a list of participants. So please just show a identification
and they will give you the key to your room.
How to get there from underground station Oriente:
When you exit the underground at Estação Oriente,
walk parallel to the river
with the river on your right. You should walk on the sidewalk opposite
from the river side. This is Dom João II Avenue and the Residence
is a pink building which will appear on your left after a 10-15 minute
walk (there's no street number). The next building
has "Instituto Português da Juventude" written on it.
